OPD (outpatient department) is defined as a hospital department where patients receive diagnoses and/or treatment but do not stay overnight. Thus, OPD treatment is for patients who do not require hospitalisation. In India, outpatient department (OPD) expenses, such as diagnostics tests, chemist bills, doctor’s visit fees, dental treatment, medical bills etc, form a major portion of total healthcare cost and yet they are excluded in most retail health insurance products barring a few.
